China stood away in flames, as a German merchant of the home was the hero against his will. When the Imperial Japanese Army invades China in 1937 and with unimaginable brutality against the civilian population he is going then the capital of Nanking, is John Raven. Together with a small group of remaining in the city of international business people, doctors and missionaries, he is under great personal risk, a protection for civilians to survive in the 250,000 people of what would later be known as “Nanking Massacre” in the history books.

In Germany, John Rabe was largely forgotten when his diaries were rediscovered 10 years ago. Based on these personal records told writer-director Florian Gallenberger the fascinating story of John Rabe, the Hamburg businessman and head of Siemens’ Chinese subsidiary, which is still in China as a saint revered and yet was rewarded never in his lifetime for his courage. When Raven returns after the end of the massacres to Germany, he was arrested by the Gestapo as a collaborator with the Chinese and eventually dies penniless and forgotten in 1950 in Berlin.
